Larnaca Holidays
Much smaller than Limassol, Larnaca holidays are a compact coastal resort and working town with plenty to do and see. Built upon the ancient city of Kition (an area mentioned in the Old Testament as Kittim) it has several interesting museums and archaeological sites. The remains here go back to the 13th century BC and temples and copper and bronze processing plants have been excavated. 5km west of the town is the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque which was built in 1816 over the tomb of Umm Haram, said to be a relative of the Prophet Mohammed. The shrine is the third in importance for Muslims after Mecca and Medina. Modern day Larnaca holidays have a laid back atmosphere and has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. The main shopping area is Zenon Kitieos Street with charming shops including a colourful fruit and vegetable market. The palmlined seafront of Larnaca town sparkles with activities, with many cafes, tavernas, shops and bars and leads to Larnaca Fort which was built by the Turks in 1625. The promenade is bustling with life in the evenings where locals and tourist alike come to make their ‘voltas’ – taking a stroll, enjoying the atmosphere and watching the world go by. Most of the Larnaca hotels are situated outside the town on one of the long stretches of sandy beach around 5-10 minutes drive away and along this coastal area, a few shops and plenty of bars and restaurants have developed making this the main tourist area.
