Ayia Napa is one of the most appealing resorts on the island, not only does it have the most fabulous white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters – you could almost imagine you are in the Caribbean – it also has a beautiful picturesque harbour lined with many restaurants and tavernas, perfect for sampling some local specialities or just relaxing and watching the world go by. It’s hard to believe Ayia Napa was once a small fishing village, it has evolved into a large and lively resort with a great choice of restaurants offering all types of cuisine with something for every taste, numerous shops mostly around the square, offer everything from daily essentials and souvenirs to jewellery and fur coats! and as the sun sets the resort comes to life with an amazing range of night life including a huge choice of lively bars, discos and nightclubs, appealing especially to the young crowd. A visit to the superb Venetian monastery with its central octagonal fountain offers a glimpse of Ayia Napa’s historical past when it was an important settlement during the Venetian period in the 16th century.

Larnaca

Larnaca

Much smaller than Limassol, Larnaca is a compact coastal resort and working town with plenty to do and see. Built upon the ancient city of Kition (an area mentioned in the Old Testament as Kittim) it has several interesting museums and archaeological sites. The remains here go back to the 13th century BC and temples and copper and bronze processing plants have been excavated. 5km west of the town is the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque which was built in 1816 over the tomb of Umm Haram, said to be a relative of the Prophet Mohammed. The shrine is the third in importance for Muslims after Mecca and Medina. Modern day Larnaca has a laid back atmosphere and has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. The main shopping area is Zenon Kitieos Street with charming shops including a colourful fruit and vegetable market. The palmlined seafront of Larnaca town sparkles with activities, with many cafes, tavernas, shops and bars and leads to Larnaca Fort which was built by the Turks in 1625. The promenade is bustling with life in the evenings where locals and tourist alike come to make their ‘voltas’ – taking a stroll, enjoying the atmosphere and watching the world go by. Most of the hotels are situated outside the town on one of the long stretches of sandy beach around 5-10 minutes drive away and along this coastal area, a few shops and plenty of bars and restaurants have developed making this the main tourist area.

Limassol

Limassol

The second largest city in Cyprus, Limassol has developed as a spirited, cosmopolitan and bustling seaside resort. As well as being host to some of the most important events including the Carnival and Wine Festival, Limassol's lively and varied night entertainment provides something for everyone, with the most popular area for the young and young at heart being the lively tourist area known as Potamos Yermasoyia.

Backed by the Troodos Mountains, Limassol consists of three main areas, all having access to the sandy/pebbly beaches with numerous water sports. The sandy beach of "Ladies Mile" to the west and "Governors Beach" to the east are easily accessible. Limassol is also a place of historical interest with the magnificent setting of the ancient Curium Theatre, the Kolossi Mediaeval Castle and Limassol Castle, which now houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum. It is also an excellent base from which to explore some of the more traditional villages.

Paphos

Paphos

Steeped in history, Paphos, situated on the south west coast of the island was the capital of Cyprus during Roman times, when it was the port for pilgrims visiting the temple of Aphrodite in nearby Kouklia. The town and its surrounding areas offer visitors a feast of historical treasures, glimpses of mythology and folkloric art, including the district museum, the Tomb of the Kings, the Pillar of St. Paul, the mosaics of Paphos and many other famous archaeological sites.

The resorts focal point is the charming fishing harbour by Paphos Fort, lined with open air tavernas that serve a tempting menu of the days catch. Although there are many sandy and pebbly beaches within Paphos the best sandy beach in the area is Coral Bay, only a short bus ride away.

Paphos is divided into two main areas, the old town being the main shopping area whilst the tourist area situated by the sea hosts numerous tavernas, restaurants bars and shops. This charming, picturesque resort really does cater for all tastes with a choice of lively discos to quiet bars, local tavernas to sophisticated restaurants, lovely beaches to historical sites.

Protaras

Protaras

Situated between Ayia Napa and Paralimni lies the rapidly expanding resort of Protaras which has become one of the most popular, especially at the week ends when the locals and city dwellers from Nicosia come to enjoy the lovely beaches, for which Protaras is most revered. The beautiful beach of Fig Tree Bay with it's fabulous golden sands and idyllic coves along with numerous other wonderful beaches in the area, lapped by enticing crystal clear waters, provide a great excuse to spend lazy days by the sea or to enjoy the many water sports on offer including scuba diving.

Although not as bustling as Ayia Napa, there are numerous tavernas and restaurants within the resort as well as an excellent choice of bars, and two discos. There’s even a Pizza Hut and a McDonalds for those who need their fast food fix. Those seeking a more lively night out can venture further afield to Ayia Napa with it's bustling night life, just10km away. Facilities in Protaras are plentiful with a wide selection of shops, however a little further along the coast lies the typically Cypriot village of Paralimni offering a much wider range.
